The Informal Economy in Southern Africa

RATIONALE:

Rapid urbanization has brought about the growth of the informal sector in many parts of southern Africa, including Malawi. The non-agricultural informal sector is absorbing the many youths that are moving into the labour market which is not capable of absorbing them because of limited job creation opportunities in the formal sector. KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
Our research is focusing on addressing the following key questions:

  • How big is the Malawian informal sector? What is the contribution of the informal sector to Malawi’s GDP? Are there variations in the set-up of the informal economy in the various countries in southern Africa?
  • How can we formalize the informal economy in Malawi and other countries in southern Africa?
